چکیده

Subclinical hypothyroidism is defined as an increased serum TSH in the presence of a normal serum FT4 concentration. Increased refers to values above and normal to values within population-based reference ranges of these hormones. It is however not so simple to diagnose accurately subclinical hypothyroidism in day-to-day practice applying this biochemical definition. Diagnosis of subclinical hypothyroidism is hampered by uncertainty about what constitutes appropriate reference intervals, and by biologic variation in especially TSH. The upper limit of the TSH reference interval was 4.12 mU/L in the National Health and Nutrition Eamination Survey III (NHANES III) for a large reference population that was free of thyroid disease and representative of the U.S. population, in which subjects were excluded who had thyroid antibodies or were taking thyroid medications or other medications affecting thyroid measurements.

Endogenous subclinical thyroid disorders, physical and cognitive function, depression, and mortality in older individuals.

OBJECTIVE To what extent endogenous subclinical thyroid disorders contribute to impaired physical and cognitive function, depression, and mortality in older individuals remains a matter of debate. DESIGN A population-based, prospective cohort of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam. METHODS TSH and, if necessary, thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels were measured in individuals aged 65 y...

The effect of thyroid activity on adult rat spermatogenesis

The influence of hypo- and hyper-thyroidism on spermatogenesis was studied in 60-day-old adult maleWistar rats. To confirm hypo- and hyper-thyroidism, the concentration of plasma thyroid hormones wereassayed by radioimmunoassay. The hypothyroid state, induced by administration of 25 mg/kg/daymethimazole for 5 successive days, resulted in significant decrease in the number of Sertoli cells, sper...

Role of Surrogate Markers of Atherosclerosis in Clinical and Subclinical Thyroidism

Background. Data on the relationship between homocysteine, plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, hs-CRP, fibrinogen, and carotid intima media thickness (CA-IMT) is plenty but contradicting and the majority of the studies investigated this issue in only specific thyroidism groups. The aim of this paper was to investigate these relations in patients with subclinical and clinical hypo- and hyperthyro...

Autoimmune alternating hyper- and hypo-thyroidism: a rare condition in pediatrics

UNLABELLED Alternating between hyper- and hypo-thyroidism may be explained by the simultaneous presence of both types of TSH receptor autoantibodies (TRAbs) - thyroid stimulating autoantibodies (TSAbs) and TSH blocking autoantibodies (TBAbs). It is a very rare condition, particulary in the pediatric age. The clinical state of these patients is determined by the balance between TSAbs and TBAbs a...

The hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis in subjects with subclinical thyroid diseases: the impact of the negative feedback mechanism.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis in patients with subclinical thyroid dysfunction recently reported to have either symptoms or organ involvements with potential morbidity, in order to better differentiate these patients with respect to controls. PATIENTS Sixtythree patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism (HyperT), 178 normal subjects (EuT) and 106 patients...
